What do I do if someone is burnt?

The Children’s Hospital Burns Research Institute at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital has these recommendations for first aid treatment for minor burns:

  • remove all clothing immediately, unless it is stuck to the skin.
  • cover unburnt areas with either dry clothes or a blanket
  • run cold tap directly onto the burn for at least 20 minutes – NEVER use ice, creams or butter to treat burns or scalds
  • continue cooling through transportation to hospital with a fine mist spray or frequently changing soaked dressings
  • never use ice
